Step 2: Drawing your life timeline

memoFolio » Where to begin? » Step 2: Drawing your life timeline

Remembering the road travelled

We are all made up of a collection of past events, from the most trivial to the most significant, surrounded by other humans who are the results of their events. That’s a lot of memories!

Of course, to write about trivial things, we already have social networks to communicate them. These innocuous events are fun for us. If they triggered something that made them important to us, they are suitable for the biography.

The timeline

Identifying the decisive, important and significant moments of your life is essential to position them on your timeline.

From your date of birth to now, create a list of these events from your life. Write them in chronological order by date. The dates don’t need to be precise, but at least try to position the year and possibly the month.

Use colours to identify the events. One for positive events and another range of colours depending on the degree of intensity of more negative events. We will use these colours when the time comes to develop the memories.

Consult the blog entry Drawing your timeline for more detail.

Decisive Moments

A moment in your life that has generated a change in you. Whether positive or negative, it caused an instant transformation or had an impact on your perception of life, such as:

  • A meeting with an individual who marked you
  • A spiritual awakening, realization or epiphany that changes perspective
  • A birth of your child, a godson or a being who touched your heart
  • The wedding or a big ceremony in your honour
  • The death of a close family member or a loved one.

Important Moments

In addition to the decisive moment, possibly less powerful, they remain anchored in our memories by the emotional imprint they left.

  • The first times. Hum, you know what I mean, and the rest
  • Acquisitions involving a large sum (house, car, boat)
  • A significant accident, assault, injustice or abuse
  • A big win, promotion or big win
  • A major failure, betrayal or significant conflict

Significant Moments

These moments carry life lessons. It leaves an imprint in our memories as a reminder of a good time or an action not to do again next time. It can also be a quote heard that brings us back to that moment, such as:

  • Baby’s first words or crazy phrases out of a child’s mouth
  • A memorable outing or a souvenir with our children
  • New or used acquisitions (car, bicycle, etc.)
  • Memorable holidays and parties
  • Travel and the experience of discovering by leaving our comfort zone

In the end, you will have a bank of moments that will constitute a timeline of life as a basis to begin writing your biography.
