Writing about your teenage years

February 22, 2023 Writing Assistant

Looking back on our teenage years, we can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia, embarrassment, and gratitude. Adolescence is often described as a time of self-discovery, experimentation, and growth, which was certainly true for me. While it was a period of significant change and upheaval, it was also a time of immense growth and learning.

You can reflect on your experiences, the lessons you learned, and share stories you wouldn’t tell anyone else. But how do you keep your writing fun and engaging? Read our guide to writing about your teenage years!

Start with an outline

Before you start writing:

  • Take a few moments to jot down your ideas.
  • Think about the subjects or themes that come to mind when you think about your teenage years.
  • Use this outline to structure the narrative of your essay. You don’t have to stick to it, but it will certainly help!

Write with precision

When writing about your teenage years, the more detail you provide, the better! When crafting anecdotes from these memories, try to include as many sensory details as possible. What did it smell like? What did it feel like? Was there a particular song playing in the background? These details will really bring the story to life for readers.

Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself

Writing about teenagers doesn’t have to be a serious affair; don’t hesitate to poke fun at yourself and laugh along with your readers. This not only lightens the mood, but also creates a connection between the author and the reader, which is always a good thing! Don’t be afraid to share embarrassing stories or goofy moments—your readers will thank you for it!

As part of the roller coaster of those years, below you’ll find a series of questions to help bring up memories and content to write about:

  • What was your family dynamic like during that time?
  • What was school like during your teenage years?
  • Who were your closest friends during that time?
