Writing about your first car

February 19, 2023 Writing Assistant

Everyone remembers their first car—the nostalgic day you drove it home for the first time, the feeling of freedom and independence it gave you, even the embarrassing moments that happened to you in it.
Writing about your first car can help bring back those memories and make for a great story. Whether you’re writing about your beloved classic or about a hunk of junk that barely got you from point A to point B, here are some tips to help you get started.

Choose Your Angle

Your story should have an angle, so think about what makes your experience unique. Is there something funny or embarrassing that happened while driving? A moment of clarity or something life-changing? Your car may be particular in some way, like when passed down through generations in your family. Pinpointing an angle will focus your story so you can share more details and make readers connect with it more easily.

Think About Your Audience

Who is going to be reading this story? Are they friends and family who know you well? Is it for a blog post or publication? Will it be read by people who don’t know much about cars? Depending on who will be reading your story, use language accordingly. If it’s for a general audience, keep technical terms toned down or explain to them as needed. If your audience is full of car enthusiasts, don’t be afraid to dive into the details!

Add Details

The essential part of any story is adding details that make it come alive for readers. Describe how the car felt when you were driving—was it smooth sailing, or did you feel every bump in the road? Include specifics like how many miles per gallon it got and how much horsepower it had (if relevant). Tell us what made this car special—did you have fond memories with friends piled into it, or was its paint job just oh-so-unique? The more details added in, the better!

Below is a series of questions to spark memories about your first car or any you had during your life :

  • What was the make and model of your first car?
  • What year was it made?
  • What colour was your first car?
  • Was it a brand-new or used car?
  • How did you acquire your first car?
  • What was the price of your first car?
  • How long did you own your first car?
  • What was your favourite feature of your first car?
  • Was it a manual or automatic transmission?
  • What was the fuel type (gasoline, diesel, electric, etc.)?
  • How many miles did it have when you got it?
  • How did you choose your first car?
  • What was your first road trip in your car?
  • Did you make any modifications to your first car?
  • Was it a good car overall? Why or why not?
  • What was the most memorable experience you had with your first car?
  • Did you name your first car?
  • Was it a fast car?
  • Did you ever get into an accident with your first car?
  • Did you have to do any significant repairs on your first car?
  • How long did you keep your first car?
  • Why did you eventually get rid of your first car?
  • Do you still have your first car, or did you sell it?
  • How often did you drive your first car?
  • Do you have any special memories associated with your first car?

Writing about your first car can evoke powerful emotions and create lasting memories—good or bad! Taking time to reflect on why we love our cars and why they become such an integral part of our lives can make us appreciate them even more.

So take some time today to write down your memories with your first car and see where that takes you! Who knows, maybe one day, someone will be reading a book full of stories about their favourite rides from years gone by, including yours!

If you plan to write your biography, check this post about Drawing your timeline.  The experience of acquiring a house is worth adding to it.

Collector of moments and not things, no wonder that I have a passion for photography. Being the oldest in the family and a father of 2 daughters, I realized quickly how much time passed by and how quickly our memories fades. I started the memoFolio project as a tool to bring together all these memories. And from the most impacting one, help people write THEIR story to leave a trace of life experiences to their future generations.
